Panther® Ninebark
Panther® Ninebark gives gardeners bold, dark color without the size or upkeep of many older ninebarks. This compact Physocarpus opulifolius cultivar grows about 4–5' tall and 2–3' wide, making it an easy fit for foundations, mixed borders and smaller native plantings.
Create contrast without crowding the bed
Panther® brings the look of a dark accent column to the landscape. Its narrow, upright shape tucks into tight spaces where wider shrubs would feel too large. Use it to anchor a border, add depth near lighter foliage or create a small privacy grouping that stays dense from the ground up.
Keep rich color through the season
The foliage opens crimson in spring, then deepens to near-black purple and holds that saturated look through the growing season. That strong color helps chartreuse, silver, pale green and variegated plants stand out, even if you are not a trained garden designer. It gives the planting a polished, high-contrast look with very little effort.
Enjoy cleaner foliage and less fuss
Panther® offers improved powdery mildew resistance compared with some older ninebarks, helping the leaves stay more attractive in humid summers. It also tolerates full sun to partial shade, a wide range of soils and both dry and moist average landscape conditions. For busy gardeners, that means fewer special demands and more reliable performance.
Add native value in every season
Late-spring to early-summer pinkish flower clusters offer nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators. Red to burgundy capsule-like fruits add subtle fall texture and may provide food for birds. As the plant matures, dark stems and peeling reddish-brown bark show more clearly in winter, giving front walks, foundations and mixed borders interest after the leaves drop.
